Bangladesh have appointed left-arm spinner Nahida Akter as captain of their women’s T20I side, with Sobhana Mostary becoming vice-captain. The change was confirmed on 18 October after Nigar Sultana Joty stepped down from the role to concentrate on her batting. ICC’s announcement.

Nahida brings experience of more than 100 T20 internationals. Her appointment gives an established member of the side responsibility for a transition that can retain much of the knowledge already inside the dressing room.

A leadership change with continuity around it

Joty has publicly supported Nahida and indicated that she remains available to play alongside the new captain if selected. She led Bangladesh to 32 victories in 82 T20Is after taking the captaincy in 2022. Joty’s response and captaincy record.

Her continuing availability matters. Handing over the captaincy does not have to remove the outgoing leader’s experience from the team. It can give the new captain another source of advice while allowing the former captain to devote more attention to her own playing role.

That arrangement still requires clarity. The captain needs authority over on-field decisions, and experienced players need space to contribute without leaving responsibility ambiguous. Public support is a useful start; the practical relationship will develop through training and matches.

Nahida’s first task is to make decisions repeatable

The board has set an initial one-year period before reviewing the position, with planning directed towards the 2028 T20 World Cup. The ICC identified the following month’s Women’s Emerging Trophy as the new leadership pair’s first assignment. Appointment terms and first assignment.

For a bowling captain, one immediate challenge is judging her own overs as part of the full attack. The decision has to follow the match situation: which batter is on strike, what the surface offers and what options will remain later. Those demands sit alongside field changes, communication and the wider management of pressure.

Sobhana’s role will also matter. A deputy can help keep information moving between the captain, bowlers and fielders, especially during overs when the captain is concentrating on her own execution.

The appointment gives Bangladesh a defined period in which to establish that working relationship. Results will attract attention, but the early signs worth watching include how clearly roles are assigned and how consistently decisions respond to the game. Nahida inherits a side with experience around her; the next step is to turn that continuity into an effective new leadership partnership.
