# Gardner\'s 84 turns an Australian wobble into a series\-clinching win

> Ashleigh Gardner\'s 84 and Georgia Wareham\'s 3\/18 helped Australia beat New Zealand by 40 runs in the second women\'s T20I on 20 October\.

Australia were three wickets down for 41 when Ashleigh Gardner arrived in the second women's T20I against New Zealand. By the end, her 84 from 45 deliveries had given the hosts a total they defended by 40 runs at North Sydney Oval on 20 October. It was an innings that did two jobs. Gardner first prevented a poor start from defining Australia's score, then supplied the acceleration needed to give New Zealand a demanding chase. Her side won the series with a game to spare and retained the Rose Bowl. [Match report](https://www.cricket.com.au/news/4595422).

## Gardner made the total substantially different

| Team | Total | Overs |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Australia | 167 for seven | 20 |
| New Zealand | 127 for eight | 20 |

**Australia won by 40 runs.** Gardner also took two wickets, while Georgia Wareham returned three for 18. Beth Mooney's 37 was Australia's next-highest score. [Result and leading performances](https://www.cricket.com.au/news/4595422).

Gardner's contribution amounted to just over half of Australia's total. That is an unusual degree of responsibility in an innings with this much batting depth, and it explains why the final score should not be mistaken for a comfortable procession.

Losing three early wickets changes the available choices. The next batter must keep the innings moving without making the remaining overs entirely dependent on the lower order. Gardner was able to stay long enough for both the rebuilding and the late assault to belong to the same innings.

That is especially valuable in T20 cricket, where a recovery can consume the deliveries needed to make it worthwhile. Preserving wickets without later increasing the scoring would have left Australia with a much smaller return.

## A middle-order role that demands more than one speed

Gardner reached fifty in 29 balls and attacked Jess Kerr for 20 runs from four deliveries in the nineteenth over. She was run out from the final ball of the innings. [Cricket Australia's match report](https://www.cricket.com.au/news/4595422).

The sequence shows why an innings has to be judged across its full course. A batter arriving during a collapse cannot always start as if only ten deliveries remain. Equally, an innings that survives the collapse needs to produce enough runs at the end to justify the time spent building it.

Gardner described the demands of batting at No.5 in her post-match comments: sometimes the side is in trouble, and sometimes the top order has already supplied a large score. Her response in Sydney was to adapt to the former situation without losing the ability to finish aggressively. For Australia, that flexibility matters as much as the size of this individual score. A middle order selected only for immediate hitting can struggle to repair an innings. One selected only for security can leave too much late acceleration to somebody else. Gardner supplied both functions within the same stay.

## New Zealand could not keep the chase moving

New Zealand's reply ended at 127 for eight. Melie Kerr made 32 from 38 deliveries and Maddy Green 26 from 22. Wareham's three-wicket spell helped make Australia's advantage decisive. Those innings provided some occupation, but the target required more than survival through the middle overs. When the established batters cannot reduce the equation, incoming players inherit a higher rate with less time to become familiar with the conditions.

Australia's bowlers therefore did not have to reproduce Gardner's dominance individually. They needed to keep New Zealand from finding an equivalent innings. The combination of wickets and restricted scoring was sufficient to do that.

The margin also puts Gardner's batting in perspective. Her innings was not merely the largest contribution in a winning total; it created a substantial gap between the two sides' ability to score on the night.

## Depth still needs somebody to take responsibility

Gardner spoke about the confidence Australia's deep batting order gives her. That is a useful resource, but depth does not score runs by itself. Its value is realised when a batter can make decisions knowing that a dismissal will not immediately expose the last specialist option. [Post-match interview report](https://www.cricket.com.au/news/4596061/ash-gardner-t20-form-batting-bowling-second-t20-international-australia-new-zealand-women-north-sydney-oval-highlights-wbbl-north-sydney).

In this match, she used that freedom to remain Australia's principal scorer rather than passing the problem down the order. Wareham and the rest of the attack then gave the batting recovery a result.

For New Zealand, the defeat leaves two connected tasks: limit the established batter's late acceleration, and find more scoring options when their own chase slows. For Australia, the performance offers a strong example of why a flexible No.5 is so valuable. Gardner could answer the early problem and still be there to shape the finish.
