# England expand contract pool\, with Crocombe and Cox backed through 2028

> England\'s 2026\/27 contracts explained\: 30 central deals\, nine development contracts and two\-year backing for Henry Crocombe and Jordan Cox\.

England have broadened their contracted men's player pool for 2026/27, naming 30 central contracts and nine development deals. The ECB's announcement on 12 October puts 39 players under contract, compared with 30 across the previous season's list. [ECB's official announcement](https://www.ecb.co.uk/news/4590808).

The most interesting decisions extend beyond the familiar senior names. Henry Crocombe and Jordan Cox receive two-year central contracts, while Sonny Baker's deal is upgraded to the same duration. Those agreements run through 30 September 2028. [Contract terms](https://www.ecb.co.uk/news/4590808).

## Seven first-time central contracts

| Category | Players |
| --- | --- |
| First central contracts | Tom Banton, Sam Cook, Jordan Cox, Henry Crocombe, Emilio Gay, Matthew Fisher, Dan Lawrence |
| Returning central contract | Ollie Robinson |

The distinction between a first contract and a return explains why the announcement includes eight players who did not have central deals in 2025/26, but seven receiving one for the first time. Robinson previously held a central contract in 2022 and 2023.

A contract list is useful evidence of which players England want inside their planning. It is less precise as a prediction of the next XI. Form, fitness, conditions and the format of the match will continue to determine selection.

## Crocombe's deal is a statement about potential

Sky Sports reported that Crocombe was uncapped when he signed, becoming the first England player to receive a multi-year contract before an international appearance. His county season included consecutive-match hat-tricks for Sussex against Somerset and Essex, with 40 Championship wickets at 23.52. That is a different form of backing from rewarding an established international record. England are making a judgement about what a player could contribute and giving that judgement a longer horizon.

The benefit of such an approach depends on the opportunities that follow. A longer deal can support development and management, but a bowler still needs competitive overs and clear feedback. The contract is the beginning of that investment's next stage.

## The development list keeps another route open

Nine players receive development contracts: James Coles, Mason Crane, Josh Hull, Eddie Jack, Ben McKinney, Liam Patterson-White, Thomas Rew, Matthew Revis and Mitch Stanley. Rew, 18, is the youngest player on the list. [Development deals](https://www.icc-cricket.com/news/england-announce-new-men-s-central-contracts).

Keeping that category alongside the central list gives England more than one level at which to support players. For readers following county cricket, it also provides a useful set of names to track across the next season without treating every contract as a promise of immediate international selection.

The enlarged list spreads England's commitments more widely. The measure of its success will come through the players' availability, improvement and contributions across formats. For now, the clearest message is the combination of established internationals, first-time central contracts and longer backing for selected emerging players.
